Ramsay Street
Toadie and Susan bid one another good morning, and wave to Brennan as he goes off for his morning jog. Both of them look at him curiously, pondering on the identity of EM Williams, author of the Book of Secrets.

SUSAN: Could be anyone. For all we know, Constantine's based on him.
TOADIE: Hmm, yeah. It's hard to say. She does say that he's the type of good-looking that makes grown women swoon.
SUSAN: She? Why do you think the author's a she?

But Toadie won't be drawn on the logic behind his reasoning, and Susan retorts that she won't reveal to him the clues she's uncovered either! Susan thinks she'll uncover Williams' identity first, but Toadie says his legal skills will give him the edge. They decide to make their rivalry interesting; if Susan wins, Toadie will clean and polish her car, inside and out. If Toadie wins, Susan will babysit Nell while Toadie and Sonya go away for a night. They shake on it.

Suite 1 Eclipse Apartments
Karl and Paul are talking through Paul's depressive symptoms - trouble winding down, irritability, lack of positive feeling, low interest/motivation, difficulty looking forward to things, and a feeling that work tasks are pointless. Karl says he's going to develop a treatment plan, but encourages Paul to try writing his feelings down so he can get a better handle on where he's at. Paul isn't keen, but Karl reminds Paul that he came to him, asking for help. Paul takes the notepad Karl's offering, and Karl promises to come back later to discuss what he's written.

No 30
We learn that Toadie thinks that Georgia is EM Williams, because she used to read a lot of teen romance novels when she was younger. When he presents his suspicions to Georgia, however, she thinks it's hilarious, and rushes off to tell Kyle that Toadie thinks she wrote the Book of Secrets!

Lassiter's
Daniel is restoring the darkroom to its pre-smashed glory, when Terese turns up, wondering why he's there. He claims he's just straightening out a few things. He's about to talk to Terese about the situation with Josh and Amber, but she coldly cuts him dead and says she'll see him tomorrow.

In reception, Susan confronts Terese, convinced that she is EM Williams! Terese denies even reading the story, although later lets slip that she may have skimmed it when she concedes she recognises some of the local references. She denies being the author, however.

TERESE: Maybe you should ask Amber, or Daniel.
SUSAN: Really, why do you say that?
TERESE: I dunno. I mean, those sort of fantasies. Doesn't that seem like something you'd cook up if you were pining for someone in secret?

Susan points out that neither Amber nor Daniel are writers.

TERESE: I'm just saying I can't see someone writing that stuff unless they had something to hide.

Susan looks intrigued. Karl turns up, and Terese jokingly tells him to distract his wife from throwing around allegations. Once she's gone, Susan tells Karl that Terese has made her realise that whoever wrote the Book of Secrets isn't in a stable relationship.

KARL: No, you can be part of a happy couple and still have a dirty mind. Look at us.

He slaps her on the bum!

They go outdoors.

Lassiter's Complex
KARL: What is highly suspicious is you running around accusing people! Misdirection is the first refuge of the guilty.

But Susan has another idea - what if Naomi is the author, and wrote the story as a fantasy about Toadie? Susan says Toadie would be mortified if that were the case, as he's just getting back on track with Sonya. Karl tells her that's exactly why she should drop her investigation!

KARL: The more you dig, the more trouble you'll cause.

Susan agrees, and goes to tell Toadie their bet is off.

Brennan jogs into the complex, and sees Amber looking miserable at a table. It's acknowledged that he has heard about her cheating on Josh with Daniel, and Amber is still clearly feeling guilty.

BRENNAN: People make mistakes - it's what makes us human.
AMBER: Yeah. Maybe.

Brennan leaves her to her misery. Amber gets a text from Daniel, saying 'Meet me at Harolds. I miss you.'

Harold's Store
Amber goes inside to meet Daniel, who's been worried as he hasn't seen much of her since their exposure. She's not keen to be seen with him, and suggests they should be more discreet for the time being. Daniel agrees they should tone it down, but as he strokes her face reassuringly, Terese comes in and sees them together. She coldly ignores them and goes to the counter. Daniel says Terese will get over it eventually; they hurt Josh badly, but they can't change what happened.

DANIEL: And this - it's just, it's right.

Daniel says he spoke to his mother Charlene and that she can't wait to meet Amber. He suggests they go up to spend time with his folks in the school holidays.

AMBER: Daniel, don't you get it? My life has just imploded. I can't just run off into the sunset with you.
DANIEL: Yeah, yeah. I get it.
AMBER: I don't think you do.

She gets up and walks off.

No 30
Sonya is playing with Nell, while Toadie continues to scrutinise the text of the Book of Secrets for clues. He's convinced a man wouldn't use the word 'burgundy', which is the basis of his theory that the author is a woman.

SONYA: I know, but what about that scene with the candles, and the silky robe? I mean, only a man would write something that weird.
TOADIE: What are you talking about? That wasn't weird!
SONYA: Jarrod!
TOADIE: Now, the scene with the feather duster. That was -
SONYA: Oh, yeah!
TOADIE: Mmm.
SONYA: Yeah.

Nell observes her parents with bemusement.

SONYA: Whoever it is, they'd have to be in a relationship. Because she would just need an outlet for that kind of imagination. Do you know what I'm saying? I mean, if I wrote it, you'd pretty much be getting lucky day and night.
TOADIE: Really?
SONYA: Mmm.

Nell glances from Toadie to Sonya, and back again!

TOADIE: It was pretty hot.
SONYA: Yeah. Well, no, it wasn't just hot. It was very, very sexy. I mean that scene at the lake, Jarrod...
TOADIE: I know!

Sonya and Toadie suddenly decide it's time for Nell's nap, and Sonya races to the bedroom to get herself comfortable!

Suite 1 Eclipse Apartments
Terese comes in and asks Paul how he's feeling. But he's busy writing said feelings in Karl's notepad, and doesn't even answer. She comes bearing news from the council.

TERESE: The council members have held an internal election in your absence. Apparently it's what local laws call for in these circumstances. They've voted Sue Parker in as interim mayor.
PAUL: Nosy Parker is the Mayor of Erinsborough (!)
TERESE: It's only till you feel better, Paul.

But Paul flings down his pen and pushes his notepad away in frustration.

No 30
Susan hammers on the door, and Toadie emerges in his boxers and an open shirt, covering himself when he sees who it is! She wants to talk about the bet they made earlier, saying it's not a good idea to be digging about in people's private business to find out who wrote the Book of Secrets.

TOADIE: It is you! Ah, you've been trying to put me off your scent. Making the bet, trying to cover your tracks... Now you're in too deep!
SUSAN: No, no, no. That's not what this is about.
TOADIE: Listen, I can't talk about this right now, but don't think you're off the hook, alright?

He tries to close the door, but Susan stops him.

SUSAN: No, seriously, Toadie. We both need to drop this bet completely!
SONYA (from the bedroom): Oi! Remember me?! I'm getting pins and needles in my hands!

Susan looks horrified.

SUSAN: Oh, I'm interrupting.
TOADIE (to Sonya): Be there in a sec!
TOADIE (to Susan): Can't talk right now - the bet still stands!

He shuts the door, but Susan can still hear him from outside.

TOADIE (to Sonya): I'm coming! Brace yourself!

Susan looks disgusted, and shuffles away.

Harold's Store
Amber approaches Terese's table with trepidation to take her order. Terese coldly tells her to wipe the table and fetch her a menu and some water.

AMBER: Is Josh okay? I've been really worried about him.
TERESE: Have you?!
AMBER: Yes.
TERESE: Well, why don't you ask him yourself? Or perhaps you don't have the courage to face him.
AMBER: I figured I'd probably be the last person that he wanted to speak to.
TERESE: Well, that's very astute of you.
AMBER: And... Imogen? She seemed pretty upset.
TERESE: If you're wondering if Imogen is still your friend, after you lied, cheated and led her twin brother on, I'd say no. No, not in a million years. What you did was unforgiveable, Amber. Unforgiveable.

Amber's lip quivers and she rushes off.

Lassiter's Lake
Amber is crying on the grass when Daniel finds her.

AMBER: I don't want anyone to be nice to me right now. I don't deserve it.
DANIEL: What's wrong?
AMBER: What's right? I've lost my best friend, Josh hates me, and I'm pretty sure if Terese could get away with it she'd run me over with her car.

Daniel reassures her things will settle down. And if everyone really does hate them, what have they got to lose? But Amber insists that what they did was awful, and that their relationship is based on a lie. She decides that maybe they're meant to be unhappy. Daniel takes her hand and brings her to her feet, saying there's something he wants to show her.

Suite 1 Eclipse Apartments
Paul is reading to Karl from the notepad he's been writing on.

PAUL: I don't see the point of getting up in the morning. The world would be better off w... Here, you read it.

Karl glances at the notepad, and tells Paul a lot of people go through similar things and get better. Karl suggests looking at a range of therapies, as well as medication. Paul is dead against taking tablets, but Karl tells him not to rule it out. He asks Paul to seriously consider a referral to a psychologist.

But Paul is worried about what would happen if word got out about his treatment, and how people could use it to damage him. Karl reminds Paul that anything he discusses with him or other practitioners is confidential, but Paul isn't having it. He tears up the paper he's been writing on, and tells Karl he's the only one who is to know anything about this. Karl gives Paul his word.

Lassiter's
Daniel brings Amber into the darkroom to show her how he's restored it, but they find that it's been turned back into a cleaners' cupboard in his absence! He calls Glen, a Lassiter's underling, and asks what's happened - quickly learning that Terese ordered the darkroom to be removed. Daniel tells Amber it's only a room and doesn't matter, but Amber starts getting tearful again, and tells Daniel that they made this happen by hurting people. She storms off.

Lassiter's Complex
Karl sits down next to Susan on a bench. She asks after his new patient, but he simply says the patient was 'surprising'. Susan explains she failed to talk Toadie out of searching for the mystery author, but adds that he and Sonya are definitely back on track! Susan is still considering confronting Naomi directly about the Book of Secrets, but Karl says she'll only embarrass herself if she's wrong. Susan rushes off to confront Naomi anyway.

Lassiter's Lake
Daniel joins Amber on a bench.

DANIEL: I know it's hard. I know you've had a bad day. But we still have each other.
AMBER: What if we've ruined it?
DANIEL: Not possible.
AMBER: How can you be so sure?
DANIEL: I just am.

He puts an arm around her.

DANIEL: Close your eyes.
AMBER: Daniel...
DANIEL: Just close 'em.

They both close their eyes.

DANIEL: This is our darkroom. It's just you and me. Doesn't matter where we are, or what anyone says or does. Nothing's gonna change how we feel about each other, or how right this is.
AMBER: I love you.
DANIEL: I love you too.

They kiss.

No 24
Susan turns up, looking for Naomi, but only Brennan is home. Susan starts quizzing Brennan about Naomi, rather unsubtly asking him if she's into creative writing. Brennan plays dumb, and asks what this is about.

SUSAN: You know that story I emailed around? Do you think that Naomi could be EM Williams?
BRENNAN: No!
SUSAN: It's just that the story seems to describe this house, right down to the colour of the walls.

Brennan insists Naomi is trying to be honest at the moment, and would have said something to him if she were responsible. He seems certain, so Susan goes to leave.

BRENNAN: Oh, Susan? Don't ever become a detective. You'd be terrible at it.
SUSAN: Why, have I missed something?
BRENNAN: Well, someone came over recently. Made some notes on the house, even took some photos. Very interested in these coloured feature walls.
SUSAN: You don't say...(!)
BRENNAN: Hmm. Turns out purple is a very passionate colour.
SUSAN: You've known who it is all along!

Brennan looks pleased with himself.

Lassiter's Complex
Underneath a lamp post, fog swirls around as Private Detective Susan Kennedy awaits a very important night-time rendezvous. An off-screen figure arrives, casting a long shadow across the ground. Susan laughs.

SUSAN: Oh, I suppose you think you're so clever - EM Williams!
