No.24
Kate is showing Vanessa around the house while Lucas broods on the sofa. Lou comes in and is surprised to see Vanessa there. Kate invites Vanessa along to Jade's party, but she decides to go for a walk instead. When the girls have gone, Lou asks Lucas what's going on.
LOU: OK, what's the story?
LUCAS: She came back to Erinsborough for a job.
LOU: Did she get it?
LUCAS: No.
LOU: And just exactly why does she have to live here?
LUCAS: Apparently she's got nowhere else to go.
LOU: Ah. So all of a sudden, she has no job, no place to live, she's up the duff and she's back on your doorstep.
LUCAS: That's the story.
LOU: And you believe it?
LUCAS: Everyone else does.
LOU: Not everybody, sunshine. OK, don't worry. We'll sort it out.
No.26
Kyle is looking on proudly while the dog chews a shoe. Jade looks less keen. Rhys comes in and complains that the dog is chewing *his* shoe.
Andrew arrives and wishes Jade a happy birthday. He gives Kyle some software that he could use for doing his books. Kyle tells him warily that Summer is coming to the party too, but Andrew says it's fine. They go to set up the software.
(Later)
Kate arrives, and has brought the books with her. Andrew has somhow managed to type all the figures in in the space of a few minutes, and finds the balance is $8000 out. He thinks there must be some mistake.
Summer arrives and comments on how packed the party is (with all of seven people there!). She chats with Rhys and tells him that her job is going well. Summer and Andrew awkwardly say hello as she goes through to the garden.
In the garden, Andrew tells Rhys about his managing a band. Rhys says it's not really work as Andrew isn't getting paid. Andrew says it's only ground work at the moment and it will pay off eventually. Andrew is not pleased and claims he's just as focused as Summer.
RHYS: One band, Andy, one band.
ANDREW: Don't call me Andy.
Harold's Store
Vanessa is sitting at a table when Lou comes looking for her.
LOU: Right. Out with it.
VANESSA: Oh, you really don't want to be starting with me today.
LOU: Too late, sweetheart, I've already started. And I'm not going anywhere until you give me some answers.
VANESSA: What the hell's that supposed to mean?
LOU: You may have everyone else fooled, but I've been round the block a few times. I know what you're up to.
VANESSA: What, did Lucas send you here?
LOU: Listen, Lucas is a friend of mine. A good friend. The last thing he wants is some hot-headed gold digger messing him about.
VANESSA: Gold-digger?! Is that what you think this is? I haven't asked him for a cent. I don't want his money, I don't want anything from him!
LOU: You're living under his roof.
VANESSA: Kate asked me.
LOU: You could have said no. But there again, I suppose actions speak louder than words, eh?
VANESSA: Are we done?
LOU: What about your family?
VANESSA: My family can't help me. Listen, I've told Lucas I don't want his help, and as far as I'm concerned, he doesn't exist. So, as soon as I get a job, I'll be out of his hair.
She tries not to be sick.
VANESSA: And out of yours.
LOU:(concerned) What's wrong?
VANESSA: Nothing. I'm fine.
LOU: Look, you should just take it easy, love.
VANESSA: Don't tell me what to do, and I'm not your 'love'.
She gets up and wobbles.
LOU: Hey, easy, easy!
She sits down and is suddenly sick on the floor. Nice.
No.24
Lou has brought Vanessa home and has sat her on the sofa and brought her a glass of water. He offers her a cup of tea and sympathises with her.
VANESSA: I'm really sorry about your shoes.
LOU: Oh, don't worry. It's not the first time I've had this effect on somebody!
VANESSA: You know, I don't blame you for not trusting me.
LOU: Hey, listen, we don't have to talk about that...
VANESSA: No, no, it's OK. It is Lucas's baby, I'm not lying.
LOU: I know. I know. Do you mind if I ask you a question? If this is causing you so much hassle, why not...um...well, there are options.
VANESSA: There's no options. You asked about my family - my parents are traditional. You get married before you do this, and if it happens, you just deal with it. There's no options.
LOU: Do they even know?
VANESSA: Well, I got my temper from my dad so I'm not ready for that argument.
LOU: No, enough said. So you really have noone?
VANESSA: I don't need anyone. No-one owes me anything.
She starts feeling sick again and Lou comforts her.
LOU: You can stay here as long as you like, OK?
Lucas comes in through the back door and hears this last sentence. He is aghast.
(Later)
Lucas is telling Lou off for buying Vanessa's "sob story". Lou says he's changed his mind - he thinks Vanessa is genuine and Lucas can't run away from the situation. He's going to be a father, so he'd better get his act together.
No.26 (back garden)
Jade tells Kate that she's unsure about having a dog - she just doesn't understand animals. Kate tells her that dogs are great - they're unconditional.
Andrew heads off to a meeting and Rhys advises him to get changed. Andrew says there's nothing wrong with what he's wearing. As he's leaving, Kyle asks Andrew to look at the books again, but he says he's off to a meeting. Kyle tells Kate about the books and she agrees to have a look.
(Later)
Kate is looking through the books and can't make them balance. She looks at a picture of Kyle and Jade on the wall and sighs. Kyle comes back and says he can't understand what's going on with the books. Kate says she'll have a word with Lou - $8,000 can't just disappear.
Harold's Store
Lucas comes to find Vanessa.
LUCAS: We need to clear the air.
VANESSA: I'm fine the way things are.
Vanessa...you can stay.
VANESSA: That's really generous.
LUCAS: I mean, I don't have a problem with it.
VANESSA: yes you do.
LUCAS: OK. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before.
VANESSA: Yeah, join the club.
LUCAS: I know, we're in the same boat. I mean, it's worse for you, I get it. I've got issues, me and my old man, we...yeah, well, it's not an excuse.
VANESSA: I'm not staying forever.
LUCAS: I also wanted to apologise. I stuffed things up for you with Paul.
VANESSA: Yep, you did.
LUCAS: I'm sorry. You must really be regretting meeting me.
VANESSA: I don't do regret.
LUCAS: Can I...get you something else? Another free water?
VANESSA: No...thanks.
LUCAS: I guess I'll see you at home.
VANESSA: I guess you will.
Charlie's
Andrew has changed his clothes(!) and the bar manager compliments him on his attire. Rhys comes in and says he likes it when people follow his advice(!) Andrew rolls his eyes.
No.24
Lou tells Kate that he's come round to Vanessa - Kate did the right thing in asking her to stay. Kate gets the books out and tells Lou that there's a discrepancy in the books. Lou looks worried and says he doesn't want anyone else looking at the books. He gets very defensive.
KATE: Lou...what's going on.
LOU: Nothing, nothing. Nothing. Just, stop snooping in my stuff, will you.
Kate gets up and snoops in the dresser drawer, conveniently finding a bank statement that proves Lou took $8,000 from the Dial-A-Kyle account.
(Later)
KATE: I know what you've done.
LOU: Are you going through my mail now as well?! Come on, Kate, this is my private business, this is nothing to do with you!
KATE: You've stolen money from Kyle!
LOU: I have done no such thing!
KATE: There's $8,000 missing Lou! You took that money out of his account, put it into your own, and then used that to buy the cruise.
LOU: It's not as simple as that.
KATE: It's theft.
LOU: I am going to pay it back.
KATE: That's not the point! Kyle thought you were doing him a favour by taking on his books. Is that why you did this in the first place, so you could just rip him off?
LOU: No, no, of course it wasn't.
KATE: He has been working so hard, you *know* how hard he's been working.
LOU: I know.
KATE: And you know what kind of a guy he is as well. He would do anything for anyone. He trusted you.
LOU: Yeah, I know he did! I know. But I had no other choice. Kate, I was desperate, the banks were breathing down my neck.
KATE: So what, you used him to save your own skin?
LOU: No, no, no. This is my business too, let's not forget that.
KATE: No it's not, it's Kyle's, and you know it is! When were you going to tell him? You weren't going to tell him.
LOU: I just need more time. But I can't tell him, sweetheart.
KATE: Alright. If you won't, I will.
LOU: No, Kate, wait, please. Kate, please don't tell him.
KATE: He has a right to know that his friend has stolen money from him. These scams of yours, Lou, they've got to stop!
LOU: No, no, no, look, it's not a scam! I promise you, it is not a scam. Kate, I am broke. I overcommitted on that bloody cruise. The banks don't muck around, sweetheart, this was all I had!
KATE: So why didn't you say something?!
LOU: Do you know how hard it is to live with a thing like this?! I hate myself for what I've done to the boy. I don't want him hating me too. So, please don't tell him.
Kate looks conflicted.
