Number 28
Rachel pulls Zeke's earphones out and tells him he could join a club with Simon. They could sit around with their earphones in not speaking to anyone. She tells him that Bridget told him about the fight. Zeke says that if it was a fight it was pretty one sided. He brings up the letter from London but Rachel doesn't want to discuss it. Karl and Susan arrive home and are interested to hear what they're talking about. Zeke tells them Rachel has some news.
Ramsay Street
Rebecca goes to put some rubbish out but finds her bin is full. She runs across the road to number 24 to see if they have space, but it is also full. Paul watches in amusement. Elle joins him and calls to Rebecca that she could just leave the rubbish on Cass's doorstep. Elle offers her their bin space. Sass comes out of Number 22 and makes a big deal of kissing Paul. Rebecca watches disgusted.
ELLE: Well, don't you just get classier.
SASS: I try.
Elle asks her father what he's doing. He doesn't think its for her to pass judgement. She hands him some more trash to take out.
Number 28
Karl and Susan think the scholarship is wonderful news, Karl particularly because everything is paid for. Dahl has a quick look at the letter while Susan tells Rachel she should be very proud and asks why she hung onto the letter for so long.
RACHEL: Because I'm not going. I don't want to leave.
ZEKE: Are you crazy?
SUSAN: I know that London must seem very daunting, but this is an amazing opportunity.
KARL: A school like this could open up so many doors to you.
SUSAN: Isn't this the school with links to Oxford?
RACHEL: It doesn't make any difference. I want to stay here with you guys.
SUSAN: We'll still be here when you finish.
KARL: Yeah, and you've got Mal and Cath over there, they're dying to see you. And Holly as well. Sweetheart you have to think about this very seriously.
Rachel tells them she has. Susan says that it is of course Rachel's decision. She and Karl go to bring the shopping in. Rachel asks Zeke if he's satisfied now. Zeke says not really. He thought that since she'd thrown away her music career she'd be all set to go to London.
RACHEL: Well things change.
ZEKE: But you don't. I know you want this.
RACHEL: It's a bit more complicated than that.
ZEKE: Well that's not good enough.
RACHEL: Why don't you just mind your own business.
Rachel does a Rachel and storms out.
Charlie's
Ty brings a glum Donna some wedges and asks if she's sticking around for the Wombats gig. Rachel runs in and launches herself at Ty kissing him. Ty tells her that Donna needs cheering up.
RACHEL: Oh yes because having two guys fighting over you is very very stressful.
DONNA: It's not funny.
Rachel apologises but is a pretty useless friend at this point and trots off with Ty. Cass comes in and informs her daughter that things are hotting up and getting serious with Paul. She is surprised to hear that having guys fighting over you isn't as good as it seems.
CASS: Do you like this Zack guy?
DONNA: Zeke. His name is Zeke and yeah I like him....
CASS: But not like that, huh?
DONNA:I don't know. I don't know how I feel, just mixed up.
CASS: Well you just take your time, yeah.
I think this might be a breakthrough for Cass until...
CASS: And in the meantime you play them both like there's no tomorrow, ask for whatever it is you want and watch them come running!
DONNA: You know, sometimes I see a glimpse of a mum, but it never really lasts long.
Cass tells her not to act like she's better than her because she's not. Donna thinks otherwise because she doesn't need a man to make herself feel good.
CASS: And look how happy you are. I hope it keeps working for ya!
Number 22
Paul is typing away but keeps being distracted by images of Rebecca kissing Andrew. He senses Elle's presence and tells her he blew it. He's lost Rebecca.
Outside Lassiters
And there's the proof. Rebecca and Andrew are being all schmoochy. When they part Andrew looks a bit like a rabbit in headlights before earnestly telling Rebecca that he'll get the car. She asks if he's alright and he says he's a bit hot. Rebecca notices he's sweating. That's the effect she has on him apparently. He disappears and Elle appears to tell Rebecca that Cass is a predator.
REBECCA: Oh Paul Robinson doesn't do anything that he doesn't want to do.
Elle says that Rebecca seems happy. She is, Andrew is a good man. Ah, but a man you're in love with? She and Andrew are off to a new restaurant on the riverside so Rebecca excuses herself and goes to meet him at the car. Quicker than he'd jump in her grave, Lucas lands in Rebecca's vacant seat. He wants to know why Elle is brooding. Elle leaves and Andrew comes back. Flippin' heck it's like musical chairs today! He's lost something and whatd'ya know it's a ring. He shows it to Lucas and I'm a bit concerned that he's still on one knee while doing so. Lucas pulls a face somewhere between "arrrgh" and "good on you!".
Charlie's
Zeke lurks menacingly in the background as Ringo and Declan play darts. Ringo sees him and makes to go for him but Dec holds him back. The feuding boys have a stare off. Zeke eventually goes to join the girls. Donna is a bit wary, looking over at Ringo, but Zeke goes ahead and orders her an OJ and she goes to secure a good place to watch the band from. Zeke asks Rachel why she hasn't told Ty about London. She doesn't see why when she's not going. Zeke thinks Rachel is worried that Ty will figure out that she's only staying for him. Rachel walks off again.
Ty meanwhile wants to know if Rachel is ok because she seems a bit clingy. Zeke tells him that he loves her sister to death and she's the smartest person he knows, but sometimes she's really dumb.
ZEKE: She won a scholarship. To London. And the only reason she's staying is because of you.
Ty is all proud, confused and forlorn at once. Impressive.
After the break, the Wombats are playing and we get a good few minutes of the teens bobbing up and down while Ty stands dumbstruck. Zeke, standing by Donna, turns and sees Ringo (face like thunder) and raises his glass to him. Donna scolds Zeke for his immaturity since she gets enough from her mum. Rachel mistakes Ty's bummed out/ "I can't believe she didn't tell me" face for " I wish I was up on stage playing" and ploughs on telling him that he should keep trying. He says it's too late, he's put his guitar online and already has a couple of bids.
RACHEL: You should have told me.
TY: Yeah, I should have.
RACHEL: You are very talented, you know that right?
TY: Well we've all got to bite the bullet sometime, Rach, make a change, y'know, don't you think?
RACHEL: Nope. I'm happy right here with you
Zeke says something in Donna's ear and they giggle. Ringo tries to launch himself at Zeke and Dec stops him again telling him he'll get security to kick him out. Ringo says he was getting bored anyway and does a Rachel.
Harold's Store
Lucas has told Elle about Andrew and the ring. She can't believe he didn't tell her earlier and decides she has to stop this. She also storms out.
Elsewhere Susan agrees with Karl that Rachel is mad to refuse the scholarship, but they can't force her to go. Karl thinks she might reconsider if they back off. Susan says she's supposed to go tomorrow, there's no time. Steve joins them and wonders who would be a parent. He heard about Zeke and the fight in the street. Susan just wants to get the boys to sit down and talk to each other. Steve and Karl know that's never going to work with teenage boys.
SUSAN: Yeah well, you got a better idea.
STEVE: Ah yeah, boxing match?
Karl and Susan thinks he's being ridiculous, but Steve reasons that if they're going to fight any way they might as well do it with the proper gear and supervised. Karl and Susan are adamant that that's not going to happen. Steve calls Lucas over for his opinion, he tells him to cast his mind back to when he was a teenager and imagine he and his mate were in love with the same girl. He realises later than Karl and Susan that it's a bad example considering Lucas' history.
STEVE: Well this is hypothetical. How are you going to solve your problem? Boxing match or sit down with a nice cup of tea and talk about it?
LUCAS: Boxing match.
SUSAN: Right, so using dangerous sport as a way to solve a problem. That's really bright.
KARL: It's ludicrous. In fact, about as ludicrous as a motorcycle race.
LUCAS: Ok, so what's your solution, o wise ones?
The Ks struggle for words.
Number 22
Elle rushes in and announces that Andrew is about to propose to Rebecca. Paul carries on watching the TV so she snatches the remote from him and tells him to do something. Like what? She says he needs to stop feeling sorry for himself as this is his last chance.
ELLE: Well don't say I didn't try.
She storms out. Paul picks up a photo of him and Rebecca and looks sad.
Number 32
Rebecca is still on a high from the romantic nature of the evening when she realises Andrew is getting down on one knee and gets panicky.
ANDREW: I only want to do this once, so I'm going to do it properly.
REBECCA: Oh, um, but you shouldn't have to, really, you don't have to I....
ANDREW: Please, just be quiet. I've got something I want to ask you.
Number 22 / Number 32
Paul continues to look at the photo until it's clear he's made up his mind...
Andrew shows Rebecca the ring and asks her to marry him.
Paul throws the photo in the bin (which, incidentally, looks to be lined with a Sainsbury's bag).
Andrew slips the ring onto Rebecca's finger, grinning. Rebecca looks a bit shell-shocked.
Paul agonises, then makes another decision and heads to the door.
Rebecca goes to answer the door, still a bit giddy, but at least smiling. Paul sees the ring on her finger and sees Andrew and turns to leave, reeling. Rebecca closes the door.
Number 22
Back at home, Paul is still reeling. He sits down on the sofa close to tears. Elle joins him and puts her arms around him.
Charlie's
Rachel says that she could put in a fake bid for the guitar. Ty tells her he doesn't want the guitar. She asks what the problem is then realises that Zeke told him. She tells him that there was no point, she's not going, she doesn't want to.
TY: You don't want to go?
RACHEL: No, I want to stay here with you.
TY: You sure?
RACHEL: Positive.
They hug.
Harold's Store
Karl notices Ringo and Dec having a laugh eating spaghetti and Susan suggests they take the chance to talk to him.
RINGO: Listen, I know I've been acting like a bit of a tool recently.
DECLAN: Chicks! They drive you crazy.
RINGO: Is there something going on with Didge?
DECLAN: Nah, it's just really different...
Zeke and Donna come in laughing and Ringo is straight up out of his chair. The boys start to fight and are broken up by Karl and Declan.
DONNA: What are you doing?! Do you really think this is going to make me like you. God, you're pathetic kids!
She storms out.
RINGO: You can't avoid me forever.
ZEKE: Oh bring it on.
SUSAN: Oh shut up the both of you. Right you want to fight? You can fight. We'll make a time and a place, there'll be a referee and you'll both wear headgear and mouthguards.
KARL: You can't be serious?
SUSAN: Well we've tried everything else. They're going to kill each other unless someone supervises.
RINGO: Sounds good to me.
ZEKE: Me too.
SUSAN: Well that's settled then.
KARL: Oh no, Susan!
SUSAN: And just for the record, I think you're both cowards. I had hoped that one of you would at least have the courage to walk away. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
Ramsay Street
Steve is on the phone updating Ned on the goings on when Karl comes out to see him. Karl tells him that thanks to him Susan's given the boys the go ahead for the boxing match but that as adults they shouldn't be advocating any sort of violence. Steve says he was only trying to help.
KARL: Well you haven't, because I now have to watch my son, who I've only just got back, who suffered a serious head injury, get beaten up.
Steve = er, oops!
Across the street Cass greets Elle before they both notice Andrew and Rebecca all loved up saying goodbye. Cass bounds over to them and sees the ring on Rebecca's finger and goes hyper, gushing that she's so happy for them. She grins a self satisfied grin at Elle who looks uncertain.
The Gym
Zeke punches seven bells out of the bunch bag and Ty tells him to work on his left hook. Ty asks if Zeke has spoken to Rachel but he hasn't, she's not happy he told him.
TY: She says she wants to stay.
ZEKE: Well she's lying. She's only staying to protect you, she doesn't want to hurt her boyfriend.
TY: Well she's old enough to make her own decisions, Zeke.
ZEKE: Even if they're the wrong ones?
TY: There's nothing I can do about it?
ZEKE: Yes, there is.
Charlie's
Ty is polishing his guitar and speaking to the buyer on the phone. Rachel comes in and wants to know what's up. She told him last night she doesn't want to go to London. Ty says they were supposed to be a couple and handle stuff together but they don't and he understands why. Rachel doesn't know what he's talking about, and he explains that they're changing, they've got new opportunities, new careers and different lives.
TY: I don't think we belong together.
RACHEL: You don't mean it, that's not true at all.
TY: It's over.
