The hostages manage to overcome Guy during the siege, knocking the gun out of his hand
Steph loves Toadie
Boyd receives a Christmas card from Glenn
Zeke gives Bree a cat called Willow
Steph opens Toad's Christmas present to her (a necklace)
Susan arrives, straight from Libby's. Harold tells her that Toadie is in theatre and Steph tearfully adds that the docs are worried about his spinal cord. Susan reassures her - Toadie's a fighter. Harold heartedly agrees with her before leaving for home.
Susan sits down with Steph, telling her she knows how much she's relied on Toadie this last while.
STEPH: He is more than a friend.
Susan isn't surprised but wonders (as many others do) if Steph's jumping in too fast. Steph didn't ask for this – her life is such a mess as it is – but she just loves him, simple as that.
Bree has a toy mouse on the end of a string and wants Willow to catch it. But Willow won't come out from under the sofa and bites her when Bree tries to drag her out.
BREE: Y'know, when I find you, I'm gonna sell you to a lab for research.
Zeke appears and Bree pretends she was just asking Willow if he was hungry. She tells him that the cat's the best present ever.
She asks him how he's doing – he's a total hero. Zeke admits he was terrified; he kept thinking that, if he died, she would be the only one he loved that didn't know it. He doesn't want to argue anymore. They hug.
He hands her some info he got from the net about looking after one's cat. Bree tries to be enthusiastic.
Susan doesn't doubt Steph's feelings but, after being through so much over the last few months, isn't she maybe confusing love with something else? Boyd is walking up behind them and hears this. He pauses in order to eavesdrop some more.
Steph wondered the same thing but any doubt vanished during the siege. She knew then that she loved him.
BOYD: What about Dad?
Steph tells him that no one could replace Max – they wouldn't even try – but Max is gone.
Boyd asks what sandwich she wants and Steph smiles, seeing this as a sign he might be ‘okay' with things. He tells her that she's got to move on and he wants her to be happy. Steph asks how he feels about it and Boyd says it's cool – Toadie's okay. He just hopes he pulls through. Steph hugs him.
Janae and Harold are clearing up the house in preparation for Steph's return. They decide to put the Christmas lights back on as it's still the festive season (in Neighboursland at least). Harold drops some books and says “Oh botheration!”, which is rather funny.
Boyd returns and tells Janae about Steph telling Susan how much she loves Toad. Janae asks if he's okay.
BOYD: It's a bit soon, isn't it?
Janae wonders when the right time is.
Harold hands over a card he found – it's Boyd's. Boyd thinks it's one of Steph's but Harold is adamant – it's from Glenn. Janae isn't too happy to hear that Glenn sent her husband a card and wants Harold to read it out, which he does (despite Boyd's protestations).
HAROLD: “Boyd, Hope you have a wonderful Christmas. I'll be thinking of you and us in the New Year. Lots of love, Glenn.” Ooh, what a friendly young fella!
JANAE: Isn't he?
She shoots a look at Boyd.
Zeke and Katya tell Karl and Susan that Steiger paid them a visit earlier; Katya might be able to make a deal that means she'll avoid prison. She has to give evidence against Guy and others from her past, which scares her – they're dangerous people. Susan doesn't think she has any choice but she and Karl will be there for her, whatever happens. Katya doesn't look one bit happy.
Boyd tells Janae that the card doesn't mean anything, but Janae wonders why he'd keep it from her if it didn't mean anything. She thinks Glenn means more to Boyd than he's letting on (but Boyd denies this). She asks what she's meant to think after what he's done. Boyd says he's told her everything and he told Glenn he didn't want anything more to do with her. Janae isn't happy that he spoke to her, even if Glenn was the one who called him. Boyd has to tell her that he's married and doesn't want to talk to her. Janae thinks he's a hypocrite, whinging about Steph and Toadie. At least Max isn't around, while she's still here.
This was why Boyd didn't want to tell her in the first place; he knew she'd over-react. Janae doesn't think she's over-reacting – he's keeping secrets and lying to her. Janae wonders if Glenn knows he's married and Boyd invites her to call Glenn, then tries to stop her when she takes up the offer. Boyd puts a hand to his forehead as Janae introduces herself to Glenn and tells her to back off from Boyd.
Boyd thinks that was totally unnecessary. Janae says that if he thinks that then he has no idea just how much trouble they're in. She leaves for Janelle's.
Bree is having little success with Willow when Janae arrives. Bree moans about the cat – she's giving it butter for its paws to stop it running away. She wishes Zeke had given her a goldfish but she can't tell him now they've pledged not to argue.
Janae says promises are made to be broken and breaks down. She tells Bree that she loves Boyd so much but their marriage is coming apart. She can hear people talking about them breaking up now – the ‘told you so's. Bree hugs her.
Zeke gets up in the middle of the night to find Katya packing her bags to leave. Kat knows Karl and Susan will help her but she's caused everyone enough pain. Toadie's fighting for his life because of her and who knows what'll happen if she testifies against the people from her past. Zeke takes charge of her bags and makes her promise not to leave. They remember what Alex used to say – it'll all look better in the morning. Zeke goes to bed and Katya's smile fades.
Bree says Boyd's behaviour could be down to stress – guys are so weak. But he still loves her. She and Boyd have proved everyone wrong. This is just a blip.
Meanwhile Boyd's on the phone to Glenn, apologising about Janae. He promises neither of them will harass her again. She says something that he thinks is nice of her, but…
Bree thinks this will be as bad as it gets for Janae and Boyd. Janae wonders if that's meant to make her feel better…
Boyd always meant to tell Glenn he was married but couldn't find the right time. Tassie was another world for him and he's sorry for hurting her.
Bree thinks Janae has to decide if she wants to be like Kim – run at the first sight of trouble – or stay?
Boyd tells Glenn that he and Janae are going through a rough patch.
Bree says Janae has to do the forgiving this time because she loves Boyd. Janae thinks she's right – she does love Boyd.
Meanwhile Boyd's having a good wee chat with Glenn. He asks her what she's doing over the holidays.
The next morning. Zeke is making breakfast in bed for Katya. Susan asks Karl if he'll be seeing Toadie at the hospital today, forgetting that Karl no longer works there. Karl knows she has her doubts about ‘all this' but she assures him that, if he's happy, she is too.
Karl admits to her that he was relieved when Boyd took over Toadie's care – he didn't want the responsibility. He doesn't feel like a doctor but he's not sure what he does feel like. Susan hopes he'll sort it out soon. Meanwhile Susan has Karl's present from Libby; it's a book about domestic products for a sustainable future. Susan can't help but laugh – she can't believe that Karl actually asked for it. However she's all for it if it means less cleaning for her.
Tense music starts up as Zeke runs into the room from the bedrooms; Katya has run away.
After the commercial break Karl emerges from the bedrooms, angry that Katya could have thought this was a good idea. He tells Zeke that he should've woken him and Susan but Zeke had believed what Katya promised him. Susan has been reading Katya's letter – she didn't want to put them in any danger. Disappearing is not the answer, though. Karl thinks she can't possibly believe she can vanish but Zeke points out Max did. Susan wants to call the police but Karl pulls her back, reminding her that Katya's skipped bail. Zeke thinks they should find her and bring her back.
Harold talks to baby Kerry, telling her that they'll have a lot of time together if Sky gets the job she's being interviewed for. He notices a kitten (Willow) eating his marmalade on the coffee table! Harold reaches for his handkerchief but then finds he isn't sneezing – maybe his allergy shot worked. Seeing that the kitten has no collar Harold tells Kerry that some people are so irresponsible and then decides to get some food Willow, while warning him to stay away from Kerry.
Janae tells Steph (wearing the necklace Toad gave her) that Toadie will be fine. She tells her that she knows how she feels about him. Steph isn't sure that Boyd's okay with it but Janae thinks he's cool with it – they both are. You can't help who you fall for. Would Janae have chosen Pinhead (Boyd, not Craig Pinders) if she had any say in it? Steph is taken aback. Janae says that Boyd's hard work. Steph thinks it'll be worth it but Janae can only manage a “I'll get back to you”. Janae decides to take Charlie for a walk – any day now he'll be up for a baby Cino (milk froth and chocolate powder).
Steph walks around and looks at her wedding ring. Toadie wakes up to see her pull her wedding band off. Toadie falls back to sleep and Steph walks back to the bed, stroking Toadie's head.
Harold decides to make a poster so the kitten's owners can be found. If the kitten isn't claimed Harold will keep it as Kerry's pet.
Bree comes round to see Kerry. Harold introduces the cat and Bree says he could keep Willow for himself…or whatever he chooses to call it. Harold likes the name. Bree is glad to hear he'll keep her if the owners aren't found.
Zeke appears, looking for Bree, and Bree makes a quick exit.
Bree thinks they need to call the cops but Zeke says Karl's right about Kat skipping bail. Bree asks what he wants to do and if he has any ideas where she could be. Zeke does but he has no money to get there and he can't get Susan and Karl involved. Bree decides to give him the money – but she's coming with him. Zeke agrees.
Karl tells Susan that he's spoken to everyone who knows Katya and no one's heard a thing. Zeke could be right – what hope have they got if Katya's decided to disappear?
Susan decides to point at Steph, who's leaning close to Toadie, and ask Karl if he thinks that's going to have a happy ending. Karl hopes so but the surgeon's have said the bullet fragment is too close to Toadie's spine to risk removing it.
SUSAN: What does that mean?
KARL: It means our boy is living with a time bomb.
Hospital – Toadie's room
Steph lays her head on Toadie's shoulder, then strokes his head. He comes around and tells her that her necklace is nice. Steph says it's the most important present she's ever received.
STEPH: I love you, Toad.
Toadie doesn't have to tell her how he feels but does she think they should slow it down a bit? Steph shakes her head.
TOADIE: Are you absolutely sure that this is what you wanna do?
STEPH: I've never been more sure of anything in my life.
Now for the $64,000 question…
TOADIE: What about Max?
STEPH: I loved Max, you know I did. But he's gone and he's not coming back.
She kisses his forehead and tells him to get better for her.
It's Elle, telling Gail over the phone that Paul doesn't even know she's coming – she's probably making a big mistake, again, but this is where she belongs.
She hangs up and is about to get into her car when she sees a man wheeling a trolley in the distance. He turns around as he puts bags into his car and Elle can't believe who it is – it's Max! (with a haircut). She stands in total disbelief, watching him.
